Speed challenge 2#

An hour in Maya, this was inspired by some concept
art I saw for the game Fable 3.

It probably took longer to render these images on my laptop
than it took to build them..I need a new computer.

Speed Model Challenge 1#

Thought I would try something new over the next week or two, after playing about in Mudbox in my free time and Maya being for work I wanted to get back to some fun modelling, the challenge is I have a maximum of an hour to model something..anything..long as it's clean model.

40 Min's in Maya modelling,probably more time
thinking on what to do than actual building.

I was going for a quirky game style building, not too cartoonish.

Mudbox Turntable's

Quick turntable render of some of my first attempts in Mudbox, there fairly rough but hopefully starting to show some progress.I've been trying to find an hour a day to work on a different sculpt an learn the program.

Free stuff - Planet texture maker

I'm working on a sci-fi project at the moment and was looking around for free textures when I found this program,Planet Editor randomly generates images that can be used as textures on worlds or for rock and stone, open them in photoshop and change the colors, generate a bump map and you have a totally free texture file in minutes. The program is easy to use and free, get it HERE

Quick example of texture I created (without bump map).

Review: Sculptris

While checking out Zbrush's website I came across 'Sculptris',created by the same people its basically a cut down version of zbrush and a competitor to Mudbox with one major difference..its free!.At 20mb I downloaded it and gave it a go,unlike zbrush the interface is immediately accessible and clean,it doesn't have the same head/body presets but does has the option to import any .obj files as well as a library of materials.
The program has two key features..firstly you can paint color and texture directly onto the model (like Mudbox) and secondly (unlike Mubox) when you sculpt you can increase the detail in one area without upping the geometry of the whole model. This allows you to drag out areas like tentacles or entire limbs.
It's currently an Alpha release so more features are to be added but as it is if you're looking to try out digital sculpting not only is free its intuitive and fun to use.
Sign up free and download here- SCULPTRIS!

My first attempt in Sculptris,10mins modelling from a sphere.

Mudbox: Day 6

This a quick Mudbox sketch, done in 40mins I kept it loose and played around in the program a little more.I was trying to focus more on making an expression of some sort. Not quite sure what expression..?

ZBrush - First attempt

After a couple of days in Mudbox I gave in an tried ZBrush, first thought...this is gonna take a while!,the interface is pretty packed and initially put me off.So I watched 10mins of YouTube tutorials and jumped in,the big difference other than the clutter is that Zbrush feels somehow smoother, unlike Mudbox my laptop didn't struggle the more poly's I moved up.Hopefully will find some time to explore the program...

My first 2 attempts,20 Min's each..you can tell I found the "scales" brush

Mudbox:Day 5...Scrap

A few more speed sculpts in Mudbox 2012,learning some of the programs finer settings...and tempted to give Zbrush a try for comparison...

45 Min's work, upper lip looks a little odd as I originally planned on creating
a mustache.

Mudbox: Day 4

A disapproving look from a flabby beast, either that or stoic..not quite sure which but it took 45 Min's to do.

Kept this one clean and bulky, resisting the temptation to
start attacking it and adding scales.

Mudbox : Day 3

Another hour in Mudbox, this time creating an witchy looking old man (with one eye?)...

Building up the area around the eyes was my main focus here,I would've
liked to see the nose a little more hooked but my time limit was an hour.

Evil John Locke??
